BETWEEN > 1
Young Produce Creative
She learned early: be good, be quiet, and maybe they won’t leave.
In a family where love was only ever exchanged for obedience, Nerve made compliance her survival instinct and “not being abandoned” her only definition of love. Now, in an intimate relationship that echoes everything she tried to escape, her body recognises the danger before her mind does – control disguised as care, discipline disguised as protection, consumption disguised as devotion.
BETWEEN >1 is a contemporary dance-theatre work that enters the interior world of one woman’s deepest fears and desires. Through the collision of three figures: a lover, a father, and the self caught between them – the piece lays bare the paradox of love: the way we run towards the very thing that wounds us, and the unbearable difficulty of learning to stop.
Performed by three dancers with a pre-recorded spoken text, the work is raw, physical and unresolved. Because some doors take a lifetime to push open.
Creative Team
Co-directed by Zoe Zhao (London-based cross-disciplinary artist) and choreographer James Shing Mu Cheng (Gecko Theatre, Edinburgh Fringe, Resolution Dance Festival). Scenic design by Jennifer Yuqing Cao (Yale School of Drama; credits include Yale Repertory Theatre and Rattlestick Playwrights Theater, New York). Produced by Young Produce Creative.
60 minutes. No interval. Suitable for ages 16+.
