“Now rivalling the once all-conquering Edinburgh, Camden Fringe has become an essential showcase for new talent whether in performing, directing, or writing.”LondonTheatre1, 2023
“The Camden Fringe Festival is a golden opportunity for the London crowd to discover little gems of theatre scattered around the city and get closer to smaller theatre companies’ creative craft.”The Upcoming, 2022
“Edinburgh isn’t the only place with a bursting, brilliant fringe, and indeed as the Scottish capital’s iconic event becomes ever more expensive, the once scrappy outsider Camden Fringe looks ever more like a serious contender. It’s smaller than Edinburgh by a long shot, but still boasts hundreds of events all over Camden, taking in everything from the expected stand-up sets and experimental theatre to kids’ shows, dance, and even magic. Runs tend to be for a night or two rather than the entire month, and prices are bargain basement by London standards, usually less than a tenner.”Time Out, 2022
“The Camden Fringe is the closest thing we have to a London Comedy Festival.”Evening Standard, 2021
What is the Camden Fringe?
The Camden Fringe is a performing arts festival, established in 2006, which takes place in Camden during August. Anyone and everyone is welcome to apply. Previous fringe events have encompassed new writing, opera, musicals, stand-up, sketch comedy, dance, cabaret, poetry, opera, mentalism, improvisation and Q&As. Shows take place throughout the day and generally last one hour.
The Camden Fringe was set up as an alternative to the Edinburgh Festival, offering performers the chance to try out new material and different ideas in a supportive setting with less time and financial commitments than EdFringe did at the time. The Camden Fringe aims to give anyone the chance to perform and showcase their talents, from very experienced performers and companies to ambitious newcomers. Since 2006 the Camden Fringe has gained a reputation for supporting acts, providing helpful information and guidance for the acts involved.
