Make Way for Rose

Runxuan Yang

Come all and meet the 'vase girl’ May Kway, the enigmatic freakshow cabaret star of Chinese origin! Join her on a journey through feminist awakening, queerness and ghost stories. With a mix of lip-synching, stand-up comedy-style monologues, haunting song renditions, shadow theatre and grotesque eating, MAKE WAY FOR ROSE explores the agency of the marginalised performer under the male, Orientalist, and ablest gaze.

Originally devised as part of the Goldsmiths MA Performance Making degree show 2023 - Runxuan has developed the piece in festivals and exhibitions, including ‘Violent Divinity’ at Luckypot, Peckham Fringe Hack & Scratch 2024, and the Soho Theatre Drag & Cabaret Lab 2024. Directed by Kang Ting (Arati) Ho, who has years of experience in theatre practice and facilitation in Asia and the UK.
