Grave Matters
Coatlicue Theatre
Get your shovels — we’re going to the cemetery.
Miss Y, a Mexican Catholic schoolteacher living in Cardiff, has been detained after being caught digging up a grave at dawn. She insists she had a good reason. The police would beg to differ.
What follows is less an investigation than a misalignment between belief and evidence, care and legality, the living and the dead. Unfamiliar traditions collide with procedure. The supernatural hovers — never confirmed, never dismissed.
As the police attempt to make sense of Miss Y’s story, cultural traditions, religious belief and institutional logic begin to clash in increasingly strange and darkly comic ways.
By turns dry, unsettling and unexpectedly tender, Grave Matters is a surreal horror-comedy about grief, belief and bureaucratic confusion — exploring what happens when systems unequipped to recognise grief attempt to measure devotion using the wrong tools.
