Introduction To My Life

Et Al Companhia de Teatro

Philip Ridley is yet another victim of the hostile times we live in — of a system that
has failed. A child who, instead of finding refuge in his parents, discovered only their
absence. Amid tense family episodes and the brutality of school life, marked by merciless
teachers and abusive classmates, Philip builds an inner world rich with imagination — a
balm that helps him endure reality. As an adult, Philip returns to the house where he grew up
and encounters traces of the past, inevitably confronting the anguish and trauma carried
within his memories.
A raw, poetic and unsettling portrait of a singular being growing up in an adverse
environment, who turns vulnerability and a fertile imagination into tools for survival.

Introduction to My Life, a title proposed by Miguel Graça, is a monologue performed by Leandro Paulin and directed by Mariana Guerreiro. This production marks the first staging in Portugal of this text by Philip Ridley.

The piece follows a child shaped by neglect and the harshness of both family and school life, who finds refuge in a vivid inner world. Returning as an adult to his childhood home, he confronts the memories and trauma that have defined him. A raw and poetic portrait of survival, where imagination becomes a means of enduring an unforgiving reality.
