Who Cares!

City Lit Theatre Company at Camden Fringe

Dennis Marshall likes things exactly how they are: his crosswords neatly stacked, his plants perfectly kept and everyone around him kept firmly at a distance. Recovering from hip surgery and residing in a retirement village , the place feels more like a prison than a paradise. As a sharp-witted older gay man, he feels little patience for outside interference. Choosing a closeted existence over standing up for his rights. That is until outspoken carer Jay J Samuels crashes into his world.
What begins as a battle of wills quickly becomes an unexpected friendship. Jay J’s warmth, humour, and refusal to be intimidated slowly draws Dennis out from behind years of grief and secrecy. Meanwhile Dennis’s neighbour Terry hovers nearby—part busybody part, confidant—offering comic relief, unsolicited advice, and occasionally uncomfortable ‘truths.’
Alongside the arrival of Jay J, Dennis begins receiving anonymous hate mail, and the fragile safety of his carefully controlled existence begins to fracture. Forced to confront prejudice from those he shares a ‘home’ with, he must decide whether to stay silent or finally fight back.
Funny, moving and fiercely relevant, ‘Who Cares!’ is a powerful new drama about ageing, identity, friendship, and courage it takes to remain true to oneself. Blending biting humour with emotional honesty, Keith Orton’s compelling play shines a spotlight on lives and voices too often overlooked.
A story about care in every sense of the word.
